John was born in Benton, Arkansas to the late Archie Harris and Annie Sanders Malone. He was a guitar player and singer in a band in his younger years. He retired after 30 years with the Corp of Engineers working on the Atlantic and Gulf coast. He began on the Corp dredge “Henry Bacon” then became Master of the Corp drill barge, finishing his career there as Quality Assurance Inspector.
